You never see a vampire that is 1. Black 2. Speaking with a black accent and 3. Telling jokes. And in co-writing the third episode of Intercourse with a Vampire, I couldn’t think of a funnier scenario for Larry the Vampire than Def Comedy Jam…

Good comedy is universal but let’s face it, we are all products of our culture. Suburban white people like Jerry Seinfeld. Other white people that I wish I didn’t know like Larry the Cable Guy. And then some other white people that I pretend to know better than I do like David Cross and Zach Galifinackis. Latinos like George Lopez and George Lopez and anything that resembles George Lopez. Asians like math and trendy sneakers. Black people like Richard Pryor. And other black people like Def Comedy Jam or what I think is more appropriate, Deaf Comedy Jam. It is a style of comedy you don’t need to hear to think is hilarious, you just need to watch.

Take comedian Arnez J. for example. His Def Comedy Jam performance (that can be seen elsewhere online) does not have a single punch line until about 3 minutes into his set (and even then, I’m not sure if it technically qualifies as a punch line). And yet, despite the lack of this very important element of comedy, the crowd roars with laughter, violently thrusting back and forth in their seats.

The minute I saw this clip, I knew Larry the Vampire (Jacob Fleisher) could embody Arnez J. Not because they both look great in early 90′s wear but because they both have high self-esteem. The dangerous kind of self-esteem that makes men do things like dance around on a stage and and shake their booty.

Watch both clips and sit back and relax (or thrust violently in your seat) and enjoy. And be thankful that Vampires, like Def Comedy Jam, will someday fade into pop culture hilarity.

Kristen Carney, co-star, is an actor, comedian and host who has appeared from Los Angeles to Europe on some of the most famous stages in the world. Jenessa Joffee, director, has directed over 20 short films and web videos – mostly comedies. “The Legend of Shizuko Nishimura,” “Shank,” and “American Obon,” have enjoyed film festival runs. “Twilight: 5 Years Later” won the Atom.com Showdown. Jenessa trained in film directing at the American Film Institute. She currently resides in Los Angeles.

Carl Hampe, producer, During his time as an executive at Warner Independent Pictures, Carl Hamper worked on countless feature films, including “In The Valley of Elah,” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” Though Carl is way too big-time to produce a web-series like this, he is also Jake’s downstairs neighbor and Jake refused to put down carpeting until Carl agreed to get on board.

Jack Ferry, cinematographer, is a director, cinematographer, editor, writer, and producer. Most of his projects are for the internet, which means he is extremely wealthy. He hopes to one day learn HTML so he can update www.jackferry.com.

Kit Pennebaker, cinematographer, was born with a love of cinema. A New York City native, Kit has been working professionally in film since he was a teenager. In 2004 Kit graduated from New York University’s prestigious Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television at The Tisch School of the Arts. Today, Kit works as a director of photography on music videos, commercials, concerts, and narrative projects.
