As the home of many classic Star Wars Fan Movies, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to let you all know that Fanboys, a love letter to all of you… well… fanboys, is premiering on Comedy Central this Saturday. So grab a turkey (or Bantha, or whatever) sandwich from the fridge, and prepare to travel to a time well before we knew what the prequels held.

Last night a crowd of filmmakers, performers and fans gathered at San Diego Comic Con for the award ceremony of the 2011 Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge. Throughout the evening, we looked back on years of hard work and fan devotion. Awards were given to filmmakers from all over the country, as people were reminded of what an awesome community they’ve become a part of.

This year’s SWFMC finalists have been announced. Visit StarWars.Atom.com to check out all the hard work and fun people devoted to their favorite movie franchise. While you’re there vote for your favorite for the Audience Choice Award in the right hand column. You can only vote once, so make sure you mean it, and tell your friends. The winners will be announced Thursday, July 21st at the San Diego Comic-con Star Wars Fan Movie Awards panel at 8:30, and here on StarWars.Atom.com the following day.

Congratulations to all this year’s entrants. You’ve put your blood, sweat, tears, and official release collectible memorabilia on the line to make the best Star Wars Fan Movie you could. Finalists will be announced on July 7th. Voting for the Audience Choice award opens noon pacific, July 7th and closes noon pacific July 14^th. Winners will be announced in July at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con.

You submit short-form fan-made movies to The Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge before the deadline, June 6th at 12 noon PST, sharp. One lucky submission will be crowned the “George Lucas Selects” recipient by the big GL himself.

“The Hangover Strikes Back,” an hilarious Atom original, will air this Sunday the 28th at 6pm on Spike TV. If you want, you can also hang around for A New Hope, airing after, which I guess is kind of like a famous movie or whatever.

There are few Star Wars fans in the world as accomplished in their fandom. Even fewer collectors manage to turn their obsession into their livelihood.  Steve Sansweet  owns the largest Star Wars memorabilia collection, he served as the first official Lucasfilm fan ambassador, and was integral in the operations of our very own Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge. In a word, Steven Sansweet is bonafide. After nearly 15 years with Lucasfilm, though, Sansweet is moving on to other ventures.

What really makes Steven Sansweet so special, though, is the immeasurable impact he’s had on the people of the Star Wars fan community (and indirectly, fans world wide). He helped carve out a legitimate home for fans, and set a precedence of fan community Star Wars fans enjoy to this day.
