Here's everything you need to know to get started.

SELECTION PROCESS

If your movie is selected by our judges for potential inclusion in the Fan Movie Challenge, we'll contact you and offer an official distribution contract.

The contract requires you to affirm and/or prove that you have the rights to use all of the creative elements in your movie. It also provides Atom and Lucasfilm the right to use the movie in all media channels, including the internet and television.

If the distribution contract is signed by both parties, then you're officially accepted into the Fan Movie Challenge, making you eligible for consideration to receive awards and recognition of little to no cash value.

ALLOWED

  • Short-form fan-made movies (preferably under 5 minutes in length).
  • Parodies of the Star Wars universe, including the films, comics and books.
  • Documentaries of the fan experience.
  • "Fan Fiction" — serious/dramatic movies which expand on the Star Wars universe.
  • Use of official Star Wars action figures, books and other licensed Star Wars products, including the Star Wars Galaxies online game.
  • International submissions

NOT ALLOWED

  • Unauthorized use of any copyrighted material (artwork, photographs, music, etc.).
  • Use of any SAG, AFTRA, or other guild actors, performers, crewmembers, writers, etc.
  • The presence of any recognizable trademarks or logos (other than Star Wars).
  • Films containing nudity, excessive swearing, explicit sexual themes and/or graphic violence may be considered ineligible at the sole consideration of Atom and/or Lucasfilm.

STAR WARS MUSIC

You are free to use official Star Wars music in your fan movies. If you choose to do so, we recommend snail mailing your submission on DVD (in lieu of our digital upload tool) to ensure your movie makes it past our copyright infringement filter. Mailing address:

Atom Entertainment

A few other guidelines to consider if you plan to use official Star Wars music:
  • You may use two Star Wars music cues in your film. A cue is a segment of music up to 59 seconds long.
  • Your Star Wars music cues cannot be continuous. They must come from separate parts of the original music. For example, you cannot take one music cue from 0:01 - 0:59 seconds of the original song, and have your next cue be 1:00 - 1:59 from the same song.
Star Wars Gangsta Rap: Chronicles may have kicked off this year's competition, but there's still plenty of time to submit before the deadline.
SUBMIT A FAN MOVIE

In years past, highlights from our Star Wars Challenge aired on Spike TV. This year is no different, of course.
