But for How Long?

There’s been a lot of debate lately about .ai domains. Some say the hype is cooling off. Others believe we’re only getting started.

But to me, that’s not the most important question.

The real story isn’t whether .ai is nearing its peak. It’s what .ai has already unlocked, and how that shift is quietly changing how founders think about naming.

Because no matter where we are in the .ai cycle, one thing is clear: it expanded the naming playbook. And that shift is here to stay.

.AI Is Still Strong, and Still Growing

At Atom, .ai domains now make up 25% of our total revenue. That didn’t happen by accident. Founders are choosing .ai not because they have to, but because they want to. It fits what they’re building. It helps tell the story. And in a surprising number of cases, it actually strengthens the pitch.

Looking ahead, I think we’ll see another two or three years of strong growth. AI is still expanding into new industries, and domains that speak directly to that trend are going to stay in demand. Over time, .ai won’t feel like a bold signal anymore. It’ll just feel normal. That’s how real shifts usually unfold. They start out loud, then quietly become part of the everyday.

We’ve Seen This Kind of Shift Before

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen naming follow a technology wave.

Back in the early days of the internet, companies lined up behind prefixes like “e-” and “i-“. eTrade, iVillage, eToys. Those names didn’t just describe what the company did; they were declarations: we’re part of the internet.

That’s the kind of moment .ai is having. It’s not just a TLD, it’s a signal. It tells the world, instantly, that the company is building in this AI movement. Over time, that edge will soften. Growth won’t be as aggressive as it’s been but .ai will still matter. It’ll move from being a standout to something more expected. Less of a statement, more of a default for companies that live and breathe AI.

The Bigger Shift: Founders Got Permission

What .ai really changed wasn’t just perception, it changed behavior.

For years, .com was the gold standard. It was safe, familiar, and expected. If you didn’t have the .com, people questioned your credibility. So founders would get creative. Adding prefixes, suffixes, or awkward extra words – just to make it work. That was the norm.

Then .ai came along and quietly broke the pattern. Founders started choosing it, not out of desperation, but by design. It fit. It felt current. And in many cases, it actually made the brand stronger.

That’s the shift that matters most. For the first time in a long time, founders felt like they had permission to step outside the .com world without sacrificing legitimacy. And once that mental shift happens, it doesn’t reverse. It opens the door to more creativity, more flexibility, and a wider set of naming possibilities than we’ve seen in years.

.com Is Still the Endgame for Many

Let’s not confuse openness with replacement.

.com is still the most trusted, valuable, and widely recognized domain extension in the world. That’s not changing. For many founders, owning the .com will always be the long-term goal.

In fact, what we’re already seeing is this:
Startups launch on .ai → gain traction → eventually upgrade to the .com when it makes strategic sense.

So while .ai gives more people a way to start strong, it also creates a path back to .com. That reinforces its value in a more mature, long-term way.

The Real Takeaway for Domain Investors

This isn’t about chasing short-term trends. It’s about understanding how naming behavior is changing, and what founders are actually looking for today.

More than anything, they want names that are short, clean, and meaningful. They want domains that sound like brands, not leftovers. They want metaphor, clarity, and simplicity. And if the extension helps reinforce what they’re building, that’s even better.

That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if 40% of our total domain sales come from non-.com extensions in the next few years. It’s not because .com is losing ground, but because the entire landscape is expanding. More founders are launching with a modern mindset, and domain investors who understand that shift will be better positioned to find names that matter.

Final Thought

So is .ai peaking? Maybe a little. Maybe not at all. But that question misses the bigger point.

.ai has already done its job. It opened the door to a more flexible, expressive way of naming. It gave founders a real alternative. It proved that you can launch something serious without following the old rulebook, and still be taken seriously.

It’s not replacing .com. It’s helping evolve the space around it. And that’s a good thing.

.ai will keep growing, though likely at a more steady pace over time. The early surge may taper, but its role is far from over. As it matures, it might create room for a handful of other extensions; ones that fit naturally with specific industries or emerging use cases. And as that happens, the domain landscape becomes a little more flexible, a little more expressive, and a bit more open to whatever comes next.

And that’s the shift worth paying attention to.

There’s been a lot of debate lately about .ai domains.
