A lot happened at Atom during this year &#8211; so let&#8217;s dive into some of the highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Funding &amp; Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, we teamed up with Hilco Digital Assets to secure funding for our company&#8217;s growth. It was important for us to partner with an investor who not only brings significant strategic value but also a hands-off approach to our operations. Thankfully, we found that in Hilco Digital Assets. We are now using the funds to expand our team and make significant investments in marketing and tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The AI Disruption<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The AI Disruption in 2023 led to new opportunities in the domain industry. At Atom, we embraced AI in various areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>We improved the discovery and presentation of domains by using AI to generate descriptions, possible uses, and visual images. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our search technology now predicts buyer&#8217;s intent to show relevant domain names. We trained AI models to provide better insights on domains likely to be purchased. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additionally, we focused on reducing costs for sellers, allowing AI to grade standard listings and refunding coins if domains are not accepted. Previously, at an average 10% acceptance rate, sellers would have required almost 10 coins for a single domain to be approved. With AI grading and automatic refunds, it now takes about 1.5 coins on an average to get a domain approved in the Marketplace. <strong>This represents a reduction of almost 9X in seller costs<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tech &amp; UX<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We added a whole host of features to the platform in 2023 to improve the selling and buying experience. While I wouldn&#8217;t list all the new features, here is a short list of some of the major updates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Improved search and discovery capabilities for buyers, providing a more dynamic experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completely redesigned dashboard for sellers, with many actionable insights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability for sellers to schedule future price increases on domains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to import leads with a 4.5% commission.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hands-free domain merchandising, including automated descriptions, categories, emotions, camelcase, and lifestyle images.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advanced insights to identify strong buyer interest, such as repeat views to landing pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI-based Domain Grading tool.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LTO improvements with flexible financing options and downpayments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early Payoff discounts for payment plans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ability to import domains directly from domain registrars via API<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new wholesale marketplace, allowing sellers to sell entire domain portfolios in bulk.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UX upgrades, Blog integration and Sitemaps for White-label Marketplace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real-time account notifications via Slack or Telegram.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI-based brand-alignment tool to assist buyers in finding suitable domains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personalized domain descriptions based on each buyer&#8217;s specific use case.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developed an AI-powered tool to quickly identify brandable domains from expiring auctions and closeouts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ultra Premium Marketplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We partnered with Hilco Digital Assets to launch the ultra-premium Marketplace with a curated collection of some of the best domain names in the world. Our hypothesis was that driving entrepreneurs and buyers to this curated collection through digital marketing would lead to more sales. And it has proven successful so far, with several high-value sales within first few months of launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Listing Growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite a 10% acceptance rate, our premium listings have reached 245,000 in 2023. We&#8217;re grateful for the trust sellers have placed in our platform, but we have a responsibility to ensure that the listings continue to receive the exposure they deserve. That&#8217;s why one of our top priorities has been marketing expansion (to increase the buyer pool) and discovery improvements (to help buyers easily find the most relevant domains).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marketing Investment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, we expanded our marketing to include a variety of digital channels beyond just Google Search. First, we reach a large number of potential buyers through our prospecting campaigns, directing them to our platform. Second, we continue to promote specific domains to interested buyers via our retargeting ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, we noticed that &#8220;time-to-purchase&#8221; was significantly longer for buyers, with many being undecided. To combat this, we implemented a continuous push of retargeting ads to bring these buyers back and encourage them to finalize their purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Discovery Improvements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An important aspect of any marketplace is to make it easy for buyers to find the products they are searching for. This is particularly true for brandable domains, as buyers are looking for unique names that may not include industry-related keywords. In 2023, we made significant progress in our Name Genome project.  It maps root words, emotions, search intent, and buyer click-through data for a personalized discovery experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Search technology now ranks domains dynamically based on buyer&#8217;s browsing behavior. How do buyers find us?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from reaching millions of entrepreneurs through display marketing, a large number of buyers discover us through Google Search Ads. To address this issue, we are investing heavily in dynamic search and discovery tools that will help connect the buyer&#8217;s search intent with the most suitable domain available in the marketplace.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. What styles of names performed the best<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We analyzed the performance of different styles of names. As expected, one-word (dictionary word) names achieved the highest sell-through rate as well as average selling price. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Made-up names achieved lower sell-through rate as well as Average selling price compared to two word (compound) names. It now scans the web in realtime to check which websites have been developed for your domains in other extensions. We will announce several changes in this area during 2024. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Simplification<\/strong>: An important theme for 2024 will be platform and UX simplification. We will eliminate features and metrics that are not very impactful. Instead, we will focus on building a seamless collection of selling tools and insights that are more actionable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cost Reduction For Sellers: <\/strong>In 2023, we&#8217;ve already leveraged AI to eliminate or reduce the costs for sellers in domain submission and classification. We&#8217;ve also eliminated paid options such as super boosts. In 2024, we plan to announce several more changes that will directly improve the bottomline for sellers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marketing, Exposure &amp; Distribution<\/strong>: This is an area where we will invest significantly more in 2024. We will test several new channels beyond the traditional digital marketing to further expand our reach. We also plan to expand our domain distribution via strategic partnerships with companies in the domain and startup eco-system <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expansion of Startup Services<\/strong>: Our focus in 2024 is to launch several innovative services and tools specifically tailored for startups. This will position us as the go-to destination for startups at the beginning of their journey, while also serving as an acquisition channel for our domain marketplace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>People<\/strong>: We will continue to expand our team by recruiting exceptional talent who are passionate about challenging the norm and pushing boundaries. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the economic climate may still remain uncertain throughout 2024, we will continue to iterate, test and learn.
