How Does it Work & What’s the Cost?

Photo by Lukasz Szmigiel on Unsplash

Are you about to buy a domain? Or maybe you already have one, and you’ve just realized a domain purchase is not a one-off transaction?

Sadly, yes, recurrent domain name renewal is an actual thing. And just like paying your utility bills, it’s not a ton of fun. But like your electricity bill, domain renewal is necessary to keep the lights on — or, in this case, your business website online! It’s also important to note that, unless you’re paying for a whole bunch of domains, renewal isn’t expensive. It generally costs a maximum of about $60 a year.

Now that’s out the way, let’s discuss the domain renewal process. We’ll dig deeper into the cost, and look at how many years you can renew your domain for. We’ll also delve into what happens if you forget to renew your domain (don’t worry, it’s usually not the end of the world! At least not if you catch your mistake quickly).

What is Domain Renewal and Why is it Necessary?

Like renting an apartment, buying or registering a domain name entails a contractual obligation to pay a periodic “rental fee” to use the domain over a specific period.

But unlike apartment rentals, your domain “rent” is paid yearly at most, not monthly. Most domain registrars let you renew for between 1 to 10 years at a time. It also tends to be a lot less pricey than rent, unless you’re getting an incredible deal on a one-bedroom!

To ensure uninterrupted use of your domain name, you must renew your registration before it expires. If your domain expires, your customers or users won’t be able to access your website content. And that’s not a slight inconvenience for any business; it’s a big blow to your customer experience and brand. Additionally, if your registration expires completely (usually this happens a month after a missed renewal) it might end up sold to someone else!

How Much Does Domain Name Renewal Cost?

As I mentioned, domain renewal is not nearly as expensive as apartment rentals – not by any stretch!

Domain name renewal fees can vary depending on factors like your domain name’s TLD (.com, .net, .org, .io, etc.), the owner of the TLD ownership, and the registrar you registered with. That said, domain renewal prices usually range from $10-60/year – occasionally slightly more.

Here’s a sample list of domain renewal prices for different TLD types from a popular domain registrar:

TLD Renewal Fee

.com $15.99

.co.uk $11.99

.info $19.99

.net $14.99

.xyz $13.99

How Does Domain Renewal Work?

Renewing your domain name is usually a straightforward process. Most domain name registrars provide an auto-renewal option. With this domain renewal method, your domain will automatically renew when necessary as long as your payment info is up to date. This is a hands-free, straightforward method that removes the possibility of user error (yes, I’ve rebranded ‘forgetting something important’ as user error).

If you prefer to keep things manual, no sweat, it’s still a simple process. Just mark your calendar with the renewal date for your domain or domains, and/or keep an eye out for emails or notifications from your registrar!

Here’s what the steps typically look like for most domain name registrars when the big day rolls around:

Log into your domain registrar’s dashboard.

Look for and click on “domains” to see your list of active domains.

Find the “renew domain” option near your domain and follow through to pay the renewal fee.

Typically, you’ll be asked to confirm or update your contact details in the process.

Once your payment is successful, you’ll be good to go for another year or however long you choose to renew for. As mentioned, depending on your registrar, you can typically renew for between 1 and 10 years.

What Happens if I Forget My Domain Name Renewal?

Generally, when it’s time to renew your domain, your domain name registrar forwards you a couple of reminder emails. Initial email reminders are typically sent one month before your renewal date, one week prior, and one day before your domain name renewal date.

If you fail to renew your domain by the due date, the domain goes into “expiration.” Your domain name will then be marked as “expired” in your domain registrar dashboard. Your website and/or webmail services will stop working after a few days.

The number of days post-expiration that your website and webmail services will go offline depends on the terms and conditions of your chosen domain registrar.

The good news is that you don’t outright lose your domain name forever immediately after it expires. Though your website and other accompanying services may fail to work after expiration, your domain goes into what is called a “Grace Period.”

Within this grace period, you are given some time to renew and reactivate your expired domain name directly from your registrar’s dashboard. During this time, you can typically renew your domain at your registrar’s standard renewal price.

If you fail to renew within this period, your domain goes into a “Redemption Grace Period.” At this stage, you may still be allowed to renew your domain at the standard renewal price PLUS a redemption fee. This period lasts for about 30 days.

After the Redemption Grace Period, depending on your domain registrar, your domain name can be auctioned off. At this time, your domain is available for sale on the open market.

Wrapping Up Domain Name Renewal

Well, there you have it – everything you need to know about the domain name renewal process in a nutshell! As you can see, renewing your domain is pretty straightforward. All it takes is keeping tabs on that expiration date and paying a nominal fee to buy your site another year or more of web real estate.

Now you know how easy it is to renew a domain name, it’s time to find your perfect domain on Atom’s Marketplace.

Whether you’re starting a new project or rebranding an existing website, the Atom Marketplace has a vast selection of available domains to pick from.
