The Most Expensive Domains Ever Sold & For Sale Today

Real estate has always been one of the best investments around, with property doing double duty as both a safe asset and a practical, usable one. So, it’s no surprise that domain names β€” the real estate of the virtual world β€” can play pretty much the same role, just online!

Like housing, the US domain name market has grown steadily. On average, growth has hit about 4.8% year-on-year from 2017 to 2022 and revenue is forecasted to reach $8.6 billion in 2023.

That’s great news for domain investors, and it should reassure new brands that they can invest in a strong domain for business use, knowing it’s likely to be an asset for life.

Even if you don’t plan on acquiring one of the most expensive domain names ever sold for your brand, there’s still lots to learn here. We’ll see some high-value and brandable domains on these lists, and you might find some inspiration for your business.

Most Expensive Domain Names Ever Sold

There’s almost no limit on the value of an ultra-premium domain, as these pieces of prime digital real estate offer brands and businesses huge exposure. Historically, some eye-watering sums have changed hands for hot domain names, but often the biggest deals take place behind closed doors, with non-disclosure agreements covering the prices paid for acquisition.

Fortunately, enough sales are publicly reported to give us a glimpse into the world of elite domain name sales. Here are the most expensive domain names ever sold β€” keep your wallet handy if you fancy any of these top-tier names for your business.

  1. Cars.com – $872.3 million [1]
  2. CarInsurance.com – $49.7 million [2]
  3. Insurance.com – $35.6 million
  4. VacationRentals.com – $35 million
  5. PrivateJet.com – $30.18 million
  6. Voice.com – $30 million
  7. Internet.com – $18 million
  8. 360.com – $17 million
  9. Insure.com – $16 million
  10. Fund.com – $10 million [3]
  11. Sex.com – $14 million

By a wide margin, the most expensive domain name ever sold was Cars.com, valued at $872.3 million. This domain was part of a larger takeover by mass media holding company Gannet, with a total value of a cool $1.8 billion.

Many of these megabuck deals included other assets related to the domain itself, such as social media handles or wider brand assets. But in each case, the domain itself was the heart of the brand, emphasizing the importance of a powerful domain name.

The Biggest Domain Sales of 2023 [4]

2023 saw big money changing hands for premium and ultra-premium domain names, and it’s clear that the .com extension is king when it comes to high-value domains.

Interestingly, this year also saw the entry of on-trend extension .ai into the top 10 most expensive domain names, paired with the three-letter English language word β€˜you’. The cutting-edge AI paired with the personal and humanizing β€œyou” makes this a powerful, and obviously valuable, combo.

The only other non-.com entry into this year’s top 10 was betting.online, an alternative extension that has proved popular in the gambling industry, with previous top-selling domain casino.online selling for $201,250 in 2017.

So here are the most expensive domain names sold in 2023.

  1. Help.com – $3 million
  2. Max.com – $1 million
  3. Hurt.com – $1.5 million
  4. Room.com – $1.5 million
  5. You.ai – $700,000
  6. Socrates.com – $600,000
  7. ECL.com – $600,000
  8. PFA.com – $450,000
  9. Betting.online – $400,000
  10. Giveaway.com – $400,000

One final observation is that the top five biggest-selling domains are all three or four-letter words. It’s clear that shorter domains, English-language meaning, and .com extension are still the winning combination in 2023.

Most Expensive Domain Names for Sale Today

You won’t find cars.com listed on any domain marketplaces for $800 million today. These kind of deals are brokered as part of bigger takeovers of businesses and brands, and usually aren’t made public until after the (digital) ink is dry on the contracts.

However, some of the most expensive domain names for sale today, and certainly some of the most valuable, can be found on our Ultra Premium Marketplace. This marketplace is the new home for elite-tier domain names on the internet. Let’s take a look at the most expensive domain names for sale.

  1. Ticket.com – $10 million
  2. Jam.com – $9 million
  3. Dimension.com – $7.99 million
  4. Exam.com – $3.5 million
  5. UTD.com – $3.49 million
  6. Jay.com – $2.99 million
  7. BRB.com – $2.99 million
  8. Onyx.com – $2.99 million
  9. Lilac.com – $2.99 million
  10. FDX.com – $2.99 million

These extremely valuable domains offer a big investment opportunity for the right business. They’re not for everyone, but when paired with the right idea, the sky’s the limit when it comes to building a brand around an ultra-premium domain name.

Wrapping Up

In 2023, elite domain names were still selling for six and seven-figure sums, proving that the right domains are a huge asset both for investors and businesses.

Of course, these domains are only suitable for larger businesses simply due to budget, but they offer everyone important lessons. Shorter domains with credible extensions are catchy and trustworthy, and provide businesses with a powerful platform for reaching customers, and recognizable English words make them even more memorable. These rules hold across domains at all price points.

Of course, you don’t have to spend millions to acquire a great domain for your brand. If you’re not quite ready to make an Ultra Premium Purchase, take what you’ve learned from studying the biggest domain sales in history, and apply those lessons to choosing your own domain!

Atom’s premium domain marketplace showcases hand-picked affordable names for your business. Our community of creatives is working round the clock to discover your new name, so let’s go explore. And the next time you start a business, maybe you’ll find yourself building out Jam.com!
