Domains can be lost quietly

Domains often slip into expiration due to missed renewals, lost access, or unexpected life events. Domain Legacy helps prevent accidental loss by keeping domains renewable and instructions visible during periods of uncertainty.

How Domain Legacy works

While you're active, nothing changes. We only step in if you stop responding for an extended period.

Set your preferences

Choose what should happen to your domains if you're ever unable to manage your account. You can update or disable this anytime.

Periodic check-ins

If there's no activity on your account for the period you choose, we send you a simple email check-in. One click confirms you're okay and keeps everything normal. If you log in, the timer resets automatically.

Protection only if needed

If you don't respond to check-ins and inactivity continues, we notify the person you've designated. Domains can continue to renew within limits you've chosen. Ownership transfers only occur if legal documentation is provided and verified. Nothing happens automatically without verification.

Example timeline
Month 0 You stop logging in
Month 3 We send check-in emails
Month 6 If no response, protection activates and your contact is notified
Any login resets everything.

See what gets sent

We send simple, transparent emails. Nothing happens automatically.

When protection activates, here are your options

Keep domains active

We continue renewals within limits you set.

Transfer when legally authorized

If your designated contact provides legal authority, we can transfer ownership.

Allow standard expiration

If you prefer, domains can follow standard expiration handling.

Clear expectations

Domain Legacy is an operational continuity feature. It does not replace a will or trust, and Atom does not determine heirs. Ownership transfers only occur when the recipient provides legal documentation establishing authority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this replace a will or trust?

No. Domain Legacy does not replace a will, trust, or estate planning.

It is designed as an operational continuity layer — helping prevent domains from being unintentionally lost due to inactivity. Legal ownership, inheritance rights, and asset distribution are governed by applicable law, your will, trust documents, or court orders.

If there is ever a conflict between Domain Legacy instructions and valid legal documentation, legal documentation controls.

When does Domain Legacy activate?

Domain Legacy activates only after a period of confirmed inactivity based on the timing you select.

During inactivity monitoring:

  • We send periodic check-in emails.
  • Any login or account activity resets the inactivity timer.
  • Nothing changes while you remain active.

If inactivity continues beyond your configured period, protective measures activate — such as notifying your designated contact and continuing renewals based on your selected preferences.

What if the recipient can't provide legal documentation?

Notification does not automatically transfer ownership.

If your designated recipient seeks ownership transfer, they must provide documentation reasonably sufficient to establish legal authority. This may include court appointments, executor documentation, trust instruments, or other recognized legal proof.

If legal authority cannot be established:

  • Domains remain under the original registrant account.
  • Renewals may continue based on your selected settings.
  • Standard registry and ICANN policies apply.

Domain Legacy is designed to protect assets during transition — not bypass legal requirements.

What about company-owned domains?

If domains are registered under a business entity, Domain Legacy does not override corporate governance or ownership structures.

If the account holder becomes inactive, notifications may be sent based on configured preferences, but:

  • Ownership remains with the legal registrant.
  • Transfers require appropriate corporate authorization.
  • Registry and ICANN policies continue to apply.

Business owners should ensure that internal succession and account access planning are properly documented.

Are recipients charged?

Designated contacts are not automatically charged.

If renewals are configured to continue during inactivity, they will first attempt to use the payment method already on file.

If payment fails, a designated contact may be allowed to provide an alternative payment method solely for renewal purposes. Providing payment:

  • Does not grant ownership rights
  • Does not provide account access
  • Does not bypass transfer verification

All renewal payments are subject to standard registrar and registry policies.
