Three-letter domains are also increasingly popular as Chinese companies with three-pin names like Zhu Ba Jie brand themselves for the West: ZBJ.com is a much more memorable domain for English speakers than zhubajie.com

Whether you’re a Chinese brand looking west, or a new business in America trying to make the biggest splash, a short domain is attractive. These three-letter domains’ flexibility and branding power conjures perceptions of professionalism and established presence for companies. This versatility and branding potential make three-letter domains so desirable, particularly in the .com extension.

The catch? The very qualities that make these short web addresses desirable also make them extremely rare. With only so many possible combinations, most three-letter “.com” domain names are taken. In fact, they were all registered by the year 2000.

But are all 3 letter domains taken? Is it possible to hand-register these snappy domains in some other extensions? We’re going to look into these questions and more in a bit.

If we go by the 26 English alphabet letters, we’re looking at 17,576 combinations of 3-letter domains. That’s too few domains to go around, right? Wait, there’s more.

Over the years, the number of available domain extensions has significantly increased. Gone are the early days of the Internet when we were limited to just “.com,” “.net,” “.org,” and a few others! In fact, there are currently over 1,600 domain extensions. If you do the math, that means there are potentially more than 28 million three-letter domains up for grabs.

Now, before you get too excited, there’s a catch. While millions of possible combinations may exist, not all are created equal. Most businesses and internet users still prefer and trust the classic .com extension, alongside a few other popular ones. 

The rest? They’re out there but haven’t caught on on the internet. Consumers often see them as less valuable or trustworthy.

Are Any 3 Letter Domains Left?

There are no 3 letter .com domains left: all possible combinations for this highly sought-after extension are taken. If you must buy one, you’ll need to purchase it directly from a current owner or domain auction platform. Before you set out to snag a 3-letter .com, know it won’t come cheap.

In other popular domain extensions, such as .io, .co and .ai, I searched popular domain registrars for random 3-letter combinations, and I didn’t find any available domains. While three-letter domains are seemingly rare in these extensions, you might get lucky and find one available or up for sale at a more reasonable price. 

Newer extensions like .io (a favorite in the tech space) and .co (often used as a .com alternative) offer better chances of acquiring a three-letter domain. There’s more availability for these newer extensions because, well, they are newer. 

The good news is that .io, .co, .ai, and a few other new extensions have gained traction in specific industries. This could work in your favor, depending on the industry your business is operating within. If you want to hunt for an unregistered 3 letter domain, try ICANN’s Lookup Tool.

Happy hunting! But for most business owners, a memorable, recognizable domain name with a trusted extension can’t be found for free — that means you’ll be approaching a premium domain marketplace to buy a brandable domain.
