Every year, valuable domains expire.
Sometimes intentionally. Often not.
In many cases, expirations are not strategic decisions – they happen because an email goes unread, a payment method fails, account access is lost, or the person responsible becomes seriously ill or passes away.
Unlike other assets, domains do not pause while situations are sorted out. Renewal windows close, grace periods expire, and once a name moves into auction, it may never return.
We built Domain Legacy to address that gap.
Why This Matters
Domains are long-term digital assets. They anchor businesses, brands, investments, and identities.
Yet historically, the industry has focused heavily on acquisition and sales, with far less attention on continuity. What happens if the account holder becomes inactive? What happens during periods of illness, transition, or unexpected absence? What ensures important domains are not lost unintentionally?
Domain Legacy is designed to provide a structured answer to those questions.
What Domain Legacy Does
Domain Legacy is a continuity feature built directly into the Atom registrar.
It does not replace a will or trust.
It does not override estate law.
It does not automatically transfer ownership.
Instead, it adds a practical protection layer in case of extended account inactivity.
When enabled, Domain Legacy:
- Monitors account activity based on a timeframe you select
- Sends periodic check-ins if inactivity is detected
- Notifies a designated contact if inactivity continues
- Continues renewals based on your selected preferences
Any login or account activity resets the inactivity timer. Nothing changes while you remain active.
Renewal Safeguards

Your existing auto-renew settings are always respected.
Domain Legacy allows you to decide how renewals should continue if you are inactive. You may choose to:
- Continue renewing only domains already set to auto-renew
- Renew your entire portfolio during inactivity
- Renew domains above a selected Atom Appraisal value
- Or allow domains to follow standard expiration behavior
This flexibility ensures your most important domains remain protected without altering your current renewal strategy.
Designated Contacts and Awareness

You may designate a trusted contact who will be notified if inactivity protections activate.
Notification does not grant account access, ownership rights, or legal authority. It simply ensures someone is aware of the portfolio and can act to prevent unintentional expiration.
If needed, a designated contact may provide a payment method to cover renewals. Ownership transfers, however, require verified legal documentation and must comply with registry and ICANN policies.
Ownership and Legal Authority
Domain Legacy does not determine who inherits domains.
Transfers only occur when documentation reasonably sufficient to establish legal authority is provided, such as executor appointments, trust documentation, or court orders.
For company-owned domains, corporate governance and registry rules continue to apply.
Domain Legacy is designed to protect continuity, not bypass legal process.
Built for Long-Term Thinking
Digital assets are becoming more meaningful with time. As domain portfolios grow in size and value, planning for continuity becomes increasingly important.
Domain Legacy is a simple step toward addressing a practical industry gap. It exists to reduce the likelihood of accidental loss during periods when no one is actively managing an account.
Most people may never need it.
But if they do, it matters.
Domain Legacy is now live in the Atom registrar.
